It’s been a year of celebration for one of North Wales’s foremost Male Voice Choirs. Y Traeth Male Voice Choir was established forty years ago in the Benllech area on Anglesey. A number of events have been held to mark the occasion and in March a book was released detailing the history of the choir. However the celebrations recently reached their climax with the release of a new CD – ‘Dathlu Deugain’ (Celebrating Forty).

It was the Anglesey Eisteddfod in 1969 that provided the initial impetus to form the Choir. At first there were only fourteen members under the direction of Mrs Magdalene Jones, a local teacher and the wife of poet, Dewi Jones. Since then the choir has had nine different conductors, the most recent being Annette Bryn Parri. On the other hand, throughout this time there has only been two accompanists as the present accompanist, Grês Pritchard MBE has been at the piano since 1970.

The choir grew very rapidly and soon set its sights further afield than the Anglesey Eisteddfod. On four occasions the Choir has won at the National Eisteddfod and has also travelled as far as Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong, Lorient, Italy and the USA.

In 1988 the Duke of Yorks theatre in the West End of London was hired especially to host a concert given by the choir, and this venture became the subject of a specially commissioned television programme. The honour of representing Great Britain was bestowed upon the Choir in 1991 when an International Choral Festival was held in Vienna to celebrate two hundred years since the death of Mozart. Another highpoint was a performance at the North American ‘Cymanfa Fawr’ in Milwaukee.

This is the eighth record the Choir have released and it contains a great variety of music within its twelve songs. Hymns, challenging concert pieces and arrangements of light popular songs are all included. To support these brilliant performances, Annette Bryn Parri visited Studio Aran to add additional instruments to the accompaniment. It’s a colourful program with something for everybody.
